Prior to its release, there was some studio hooplah with Annihilation and whether it would garner any kind of love from moviegoers as Paramount said it was "too intellectual". They weren't wrong- the movie made me sit back and think the entire time I was watching it, but it wasn't a bad thing.  I admit, I felt a bit stupid at times during my viewing, but I appreciated that and don't particularly care for my movies to spoon feed me every bit of a scene.  However, as more and more people see the movie, I can only imagine how divisive this one will be but I can say with every bit of me- IT WAS SO GOOD.

"Long Live The New Flesh!"

There's probably a lot to unpack about Cronenberg's eerily prophetic sci-fi-ish horror flick, Videodrome, when it comes to society and mass media but honestly I feel like I wouldn't be saying anything that hasn't already been waxed over by other sources.  I can, however, attest to the fact that Cronenberg was definitely on to something (whether he thought his ideas would ever actually come to fruition or not) with mass media/technology/reality tv becoming something that almost rules our lives these days.

I was initially looking forward to this movie because it had an interesting concept and boasted a pretty great cast (Kate Mara, Anya Taylor-Joy, Toby Jones, Brian Cox, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Paul Giamatti), but I probably should have become concerned when I didn't hear much of a peep about it upon its release back in Sept.  I have, however, heard that you're better off watching Ex Machina (which I have yet to see), but I have a feeling they're probably right.

 “Aaah!” “Aaaahh!” “AAAAAHHHHHH!”

   

  These are the only lines you’ll get from the great TOR JOHNSON in this inane movie meltdown.  And if you, like me, adore that big barrel of Swedish man-monster, you’re gonna be mightily disappointed in director Coleman Francis’s waste of a perfectly good Tor.  The best thing about this dud is the mercifully short running time. And maybe ¼ of that bare hour contains actual screen time with the Torminator.  Bummer, huh?    Exploding with inconsistencies, ridiculous edits, and a bizarre narrator straight out of every high school Driver’s Ed movie you’ve ever seen, “THE BEAST OF YUCCA FLATS” promises to deliver a veritable nuclear blast of  bad- movie goodness.  Cold War Commies; mutilating radiation; a vacationing family;  two  hot chicks; and  a deep-fried psycho Beast in the person of Ed Wood alumni Tor Johnson.  A fine start, right?  Here we go, Movie Slaves:

The Phoenix Incident (2016)

Sometimes I'm a glutton for punishment- especially when it's a movie about aliens or if it's shot found footage/mockumentary-style.  The Phoenix Incident combined the two and we all have our guilty pleasures so I gave it a watch and I'm almost 90% sure the film gave me zero real feelings.  Is that even possible?

Circle (2015)

A group of people stuck in a room or confined area with no recollection of how they got there and all faced with imminent death unless they follow a set of rules or vote, usually until one person is the victor/survivor.  That's a basic premise of more than a few films we've seen (Cube, Saw, Exam), and really, when you've seen one it's easy to say you've seen 'em all.  Circle takes all the familiarity of those films and adds a little bit of an interesting sci-fi touch.

Cruel & Unusual (2014)

If you've seen this before you're probably thinking "what the heck, SB, this isn't a horror movie"- and you're totally right, it's not, but the shit these characters had to go through was pretty damn scary.  And I can do whatever the heck I want on my blog. YEAH.  Canadian thriller, Cruel & Unusual, is like a weird mashup of Carnival of Souls and Groundhog Day that takes an interesting turn by the final scene of the film.

Chris came up to lovely 'ol Austin last weekend at which point we decided we needed a new video review.  And naturally, we decided on the 1990 "classic" Tremors.

Blood Glacier (2013)

Blood Glacier.  The name alone reeks of cheesy B-grade horror.  I've been hearing the name float around in the horror community the last few weeks but surprisingly, didn't hear many reviews on it.  I imagined it was a movie about a killer glacier so I tried to distance myself as much as possible from it.  Then I saw it was put up on Netflix and decided to bite that bullet and sit down for a watch.  Wait, researchers (in a desolate, cold wasteland known as the Austrian Alps, fighting off otherworldly monsters that use humans or anything it lands on, really, as incubators?  Wait a minute...did John Carpenter make this?

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes review!
