A found footage movie about a "cult"?  Sign me up!  I had actually heard about The Triangle (not to be confused with '09s time-bending Triangle) a while back, but what drew me to it (ff and cults) was also what turned me off to rushing to see it.  As I've mentioned several times before, the sub-genre is a guilty pleasure of mine, but also one that is FULL of more misses than hits, so I usually go into these with some trepidation; not to mention most horror flicks about cults seem to follow the same formula.  I was sure The Triangle was going to follow in the same footsteps as movies like The Sacrament, but lemme tell ya, I was pretty surprised by this one.

You know something is up when a movie was shot 4 years before it's release, and when done so, is shown for only one night (Halloween) at 10pm.  It also seems like Bella Thorne is 0-2 when it comes to horror movies she stars in that end up in distribution hell with shit releases (Amityville: The Awakening).  There's a quote that floats around about not getting your hopes up, so then you won't be let down- that can definitely be applied to Keep Watching.

The Phoenix Incident (2016)

Sometimes I'm a glutton for punishment- especially when it's a movie about aliens or if it's shot found footage/mockumentary-style.  The Phoenix Incident combined the two and we all have our guilty pleasures so I gave it a watch and I'm almost 90% sure the film gave me zero real feelings.  Is that even possible?

Hangman (2015)

Jesus, that's a pretty terrible cover for this one, huh?  As is expected with most found footage movies, there's the obligatory "inspired by true events" note to up the spook factor for us (which basically means nothing in the movie actually happened).  What Hangman does manage to do, however, with the tired subgenre is give the film an inventive execution and a couple of creepy moments here and there...but that's about it, unfortunately.

Holy shit, this movie pissed me off so much in a way that I didn't think was possible just from watching a movie.  I think the last time a movie made me legit angry was when I saw Kevin Smith's Red State (for obvious reasons), but Amber Alert was aggravating to me on a whole other level.

I'm sure I'm not the only person who's terrified of old folks, right?  And I don't mean your sweet, wise, grandparents who give you those weird watermelon hard candies and make inappropriate jokes when you're around large groups of people.  I mean the old people who don't know where the fuck they're at and just generally act like they've been taken over by some brittle-boned-loving demon.  M. Night Shyamalan's The Visit will seriously make you reconsider spending time with those grandparents that you just don't see often enough.

Creep (2015)

 Creep is a perfect example that you don't need all the bells and whistles to make a really effective horror film.  Sometimes all you need is a camera, two guys, and a 10 page "script".  A wolf mask named "Peachfuzz" doesn't hurt either...

Area 51 (2015)

Area 51 is a fascinating place and has been surrounded by mystery and conspiracy theories for decades. From aliens being housed there to possible weather-controlling weapons- you name it, the secret military base probably has it.  Of course, you can't just stroll right on in.  Everyone has seen photos of the infamously ominous signs telling you they will shoot your ass dead if you trespass- but what if you had the option to successfully sneak in and see what Area 51 is really all about, would you?  That being said, when I heard about Oren Peli (Paranormal Activity) directing a sci-fi horror film about Area 51, I knew I had to watch it- good or bad.

V/H/S 2 (2013)

Nowadays it's not often enough that we see a sequel sort of outdo it's predecessor but V/H/S 2 (previously titled S-VHS) definitely did just that.  It was crazier, gorier, and all-around violent as fuck- and it ruled.

I'm a huge fan of anthology horror films- Creepshow, Trick 'r Treat, 3 Extremes, just to name a few.  It might be my mild ADD but I love a film that gives me mini-films in itself that all come together to tell a cohesive story.  There probably aren't as many anthology films as there are found footage ones, so hearing that V/H/S was going to combine the two with a group of (then) relatively unknown directors, I was all in.  2 1/2 years later and this movie is still is a blast to watch.

Grave Encounters 2 (2012)

Grave Encounters 2 was definitely one of those movies that tried to cash in on the unexpected success of it's predecessor.  But as many sequels have shown us time and time again, this one failed to garner any kind of positive attention for the most part (especially from me).  I tried to go into this film with an open-mind as most reviewers should, but this one didn't give me much hope- and for good reason.

Pretty much, if you haven't heard of Grave Encounters, you've been living under a weird rock that doesn't let you watch horror movies.  I'm also an avid defender of (most) found footage films despite their typical formula that lost its appeal somewhere along the way.  From the get-go GE didn't seem to hold much promise in the way of giving us something fresh and interesting, but dammit, they sure pulled a fast one over us because a lot of people (including me) fucking love this movie.  It has most definitely gained a cult following in the horror community.

Looks like we're back on the found footage trail this week with Josh Stewart's (The Collector, The Collection) directorial debut film, The Hunted.  I ain't even gonna lie, I love me some Josh Stewart, so naturally I was pretty excited to hear he had written/directed and would be starring in a new horror film.  I'm not even going to go over the "found footage" debate because I already discussed that in my last post for The Houses October Built.  I will say that while The Hunted suffers a few pitfalls of the genre and some of the mistakes that usually come with first-time directors, this film had more good than bad.

The Houses October Built (2014)

I'm one of the few that actually enjoys a good found footage film (see: GOOD) and I'll get down on any film that is centered around the Halloween holiday itself.  After much internet buzz, my old man and I decided to sit our asses down and rent The Houses October Built, not to be confused by the documentary bearing the same title by the same director.  By the end credits, we were more disappointed than spooked.

Skinwalker Ranch (2013)

The leading contender for the worlds most banned film and the grandfather of "found footage" genre, directed by Ruggero Deodato,  Cannibal Holocaust has a near mythic and notorious reputation among cinephiles and horror enthusiasts alike. A marathon display of the viewer's stamina and strength of resolve up against a mad man's twisted and bloody nightmare. So what better launching point for us to use as we dive into the churning sea of cinema.
